Can Proscar replace Propecia ?

Since Proscar and Propecia are both contain Finasteride.
The only different between the two are one is contain 5mg and the other is contain1mg of Finasteride.
Ideal, if I break the Proscar into 5 pieces, then each piece will contain 1 mg of Finasteride which is exactly the same as Propecia.

I saw this on a US web site, does anyone know would this work?

PROSCAR is indicated for the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate to improve symptoms; reduce the risk of acute urinary retention (AUR); and reduce the risk of the need for surgery, including transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and prostatectomy.
PROSCAR administered in combination with the alpha-blocker doxazosin is indicated to reduce the risk of symptomatic progression of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) (a confirmed >4-point increase in American Urological Association [AUA] symptom score).

From the view of the manufacturer, it is not advised to do so. The main reason is that you cannot cut it exactly into 5 pieces. Then, the dosage would not be the same. Hence, the effect may be deminished.
My point of view is that two different products are intended for two different treatment as you may know. If you really use Proscar for male alopecia, but not for BPH, any adverse consequences brought by the drug may not be responsible by the manufacturer.
You can do so, but you need to balance the risk.
