1. Get a crate that's large enough to allow for growth, but comes with a divider so that you can adjust the amount of room she has. You want to give just enough room that she can stand, but not enough where she can poop and step to the side.

2. Make your schedule for feeding, water, potty and STICK WITH IT. Allow for taking your new baby out additional times during the night when she's young, but by the age of 12 weeks, you should be able to cut back a little.

3. Keep you pup on a leash at ALL TIMES. This not only helps you get her potty trained, but keeps her safe. If you let her off the leash to do her business, she'll think it's play time and she may never go potty.

4. Praise and treat - this will work to keep your dog happy and motivated.

5. Do NOT let your dog run your house until and only until she's completely reliable. Keep your dog on a leash, even in the house, when you are not playing with her.

6. Consider training classes. It's money well spent, especially if you find a good, experienced trainer.

7. Patience - it took time for your mom to potty train you...same applies for you new pup.

Enjoy!

HI!

I have had 5 dogs in my life and all of them are all potty trained. after my pomeranian of 10 years died last year....it was sad. I got a pug. the trick to train them early ! to go to the potty area to pee and poo is very important!

anytime you see any signs that shows they are going to pee or poo, quickly bring them on to the potty tray and keep saying "poo poo " or "pee pee" and do not leave the doggie untill he/she did her business in the potty box! then give them a treat very quick so they won't forget why you are rewarding them.

for me it took about a good 2 months almost everyday training my pug is now potty trained. she NEVER pee or poop outside of the litter box! the key is be patient! you really have to watch out any sign they are redy to pee or poo and wait till they did their business in the litter box then reward them. try it out, it has been working like wonders for me!

after your puppy is trained, maybe you can reward him or her from this super cute online store FancyLulu.com everything is so cute there I just can't stand it ! LOL

find the place that the dog poop and press his head down to show him the poop and said no and then point to the correct place to where you want him to poop and if he does it right, then give him a treat and he'll know where to poop next time

It's very simple, but you have to show patience. First, if the dog has an accident inside, do not punish the dog. Roll up a newspaper, and bop yourself on the head. The dog only knows that he has to pee, so you have to take him outside to take care of his business.

Watch for signs, and keep an eye on him. If he's roaming and sniffing around the house, or seems anxious, he might very well have to go. Try to keep a journal of times. Take him out right after he drinks water, and within 30 minutes to an hour after eating. Keep him on a leash. Take your time, and let him carry out his business. Carry treats with you, and when he goes, reward and praise him.

If you work, and you have to leave him unattended for 8 or 9 hours, put him in a small room and close it off with a toddler gate or something. Dogs prefer to pee in something absorbent. I've used a large shallow plastic container, like a large cat litter box, you can fill it with cat litter, or shreaded paper or something.

Remember that it never works to try to train a dog where not to pee, you have to train him to pee where you want him to. It can take time, patience and commitment.

There are many helpful books and DVDs on the subject of dog training, many of which you can check out at your public library, or purchase at pet stores.

i think it would depend on the age of the dog and what kind of potty training you want (litter box, peepee pads, outside... ).
i tried teaching my dog not to do his business inside with newspapers on the floor while he was a puppy... back then we didn't have peepee pads =P and when that didn't work we just built him a dog house and gave him the run of the backyard.

i've heard older dogs are more difficult to train because they have already learned that behaviour and it may be harder to correct. i find this true with my fiend who rescued a 1 year old that still pees on the furniture even after he's peed outside.

good luck

Dogs do not develop full bladder control until 6 months. The only way to potty train puppies is to confine them to only a few rooms by using baby gates and let them outside whenever you think they may need to go. And to clean up after their many messes, cuz there will be many messes!! No way to avoid them! I have had two puppies, so I know from experience. Crate training works for trying to get them to not go during their sleep.

Get some books on crate training. It's a wonderful thing.

Dogs adopt the crate as their "den" and won't soil it. You will have to ease the dog into it, but you'll love it once she's trained!
