A coil, having both resistance and inductance, has a total effective impedance of 50Ω and phase angle of the current through it with respect to the voltage across it is 45゜lag. The coil is connected in series with a 40Ω resistor across a sinusoidal supply. The circuit current is 3A. By constructing a phasor diagram, estimate the supply voltage and the circuit phase angle.

Ans: 250V, 26゜lagging

The impedance of the coil
= 50 ∠45 deg ohm
The impedance of the coil and a 40 ohm resistor in series
= 50 ∠45 deg + 40 ohm
= 35.355 + 35.355j + 40 ohm
= 75.355 + 35.355j ohm
= 83.237 ∠25.135 deg ohm
The circuit current is 3A
The supply voltage = 83.237 * 3 V
= 249.71V
The circuit phase angle is 25.135 deg lagging
