The blood glucose level in people have daily fluctuations and it is not unusual to have these changes, therefore it is unwise to make a diagnosis of diabetes based on just a single reading. Doctors would periodically screen for these common medical problems
The fasting(空腹) glucose level in normal subjects should be <5.6. Those within 5.6 - 7.0 is classified as Impaired Fasting Glucose. >7 suggests Diabetes Mellitus (糖尿病)
Impaired Fasting Glucose would be what we call a borderline case, not to the extent of 糖尿病, but sort of gives a signal for us to find out more. That's why the doctor ordered an OGTT, which is more specific in determining whether you have diabetes.
Other factors which affects 空腹 glucose includes whether you have really fasted overnight(or whether you have been naughty and had a snack in the morning)
OGTT means Oral Glucose Tolerance Test: done by drinking a standard amount of glucose solution(75gm glucose in 300ml water) and we usually look at the 2 hour level(2hr postpandrial). If the level is < 7.8, it is normal(Congratz, you are normal :P). If it is between 7.8 and 11.1, it is called Impaired Glucose Tolerance(IGT) and >11.1 would be Diabetes(糖尿病).
So you don't need to worry about diabetes~
But there are general health measures everyone should take to reduce the chance of heart attack or stroke~
They include:
1) Quit smoking
2) Exercise (30minutes 3-4 times per week, please, it really helps)
3) Weight reduction if overweight (BMI>25)
4) Control blood pressure (by medication and monitoring)
5) Good eating habits: regular eating habits, do not skip meals, reduce fat and cooking oil, avoid simple carbohydrates eg sweets, eat plenty of high fibre food eg whole wheat bread, apples etc
6) Regular medical followup~
