Traditionally, the family is responsible for taking care of old people. It is because China was a agricultural society, and there was not any form of social security. In modern times, Chinese communities such as mainland China and Hong Kong have seen the shift of such responsibilities from family to community. Old people spend their later years of life in government-financed institutions, and some live on the old age allowance provided by the government. Some aruge that the government has not done enough to take care of the elderly, while the goverment has attempted to revive the tradition of family taking care of the old people, in face of the increasingly heavy burden of providing social security.
