anyone thats good at math, I need help fast?

The difference is 70 cars. Take this and divide it by the first number (408) and multiply by 100 to get a percentage.

The number of cars this year is up by 17.15%... I'm not sure where you got 4.4%

...478 is NOT 408 + 4.4%...
I found that the increase is about 17.15%: the difference between 408 and 478 is 70, then divide 70 by 408, and times the answer by 100 to get a percent.

Let x= the fractional difference between the amounts.

408x + 408 = 478
408(x+1)=478
x+1=478/408
x=(478/408) -1
x=1.17-1
x=.17
multiply by 100 for percent and there is a 17% difference.

x/100 * 408 = 70
408x/100 = 70
408x = 7000
x = 7000/408

i do not know how u got 4.4 %
by this method i get 17.15 %

The answer is not 4.4% it is 17.15%

to work out percetage increase /decrease

the formular is [(final - intial)/ initial ]x 100
in our case, [(478-408) /408] x100 = 17 %

if it was the other way around say, 408 cars this year & I had 478 cars last year, the formula would give u a negative answer which makes sense, bcos there has been a decrease.

(478-408)/408 = .172 or 17.2 % increase, not 4.4%.

A 4.4% increase would be 408 x .044 = 17.9 more cars.
