This novel ”The Little Match Girl” is a famous story among children and has been translated into many languages. The author is HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON, who was a Danish writer of nineteenth century. He was good at writing children’s stories which were very touching. This novel “The Little Match Girl” is a good example of his work.
It was about a poor girl who sold matches in the street. The girl had to support her family as her father didn’t work but drank wine every night. Every day, her father gave her some matches to sell. If she could not sell all of them, her father would treat her badly, such as not giving her food for a whole night. If she could not sell any of them, she would be even beaten by her father. However, she did not blame her father for treating her badly.
The streets were very cold. Many people stayed inside their houses but the little match girl had to stand for five hours with torn clothes. Her shoes were torn by long walking. So, she wore her mother’s shoes which were too large for her. She walked with difficulty and cried out, “Please buy some matches.” But no one responded to her. What a poor girl she was!
Because of the bad weather, she could not sell any matches because there was no one in the streets. She was afraid she would be beaten, so she did not go home. She walked in the street here and there selling her matches. Then she walked to a corner for shelter from the falling snow. Because of the coldness, she lit a match. Bravo! She saw a big stove. She enjoyed the warmth of it. Then, she saw a table full of delicious food and drink. “Oh! Can I have all of them now” she cried delightfully. Suddenly, one of the stars fell from the sky and this reminded her of her grandmother, who treated her well. Then she lit another match. She saw her grandmother smiling at her. Hoping to hold on the look of her grandmother, she lit all her matches. Finally, her grandmother wrapped the little match girl in her arms and lifted her up to the sky. The little match girl was dead.
I think that in reality, the society is full of contradictions, cruelty and kindness. The story vividly illustrated this. Like the little girl, her father was harsh and her grandmother was kind and full of love. Like the rich people in town, they had sumptuous food and magnificent stove and the little match girl had to sell matches and wander in the coldness outside. So I think that the story suggested that we should try a little more kindness to others and lend a helping hand to those in need and less fortunate people. I think that our community would be better if everybody is more caring and kind-hearted towards others.
