The Victoria Park is a popular venue for large-scale events for its convenient access. Events that are held there include the Lunar New Year Fair during the Chinese New Year, the Hong Kong Flower Show in March, Mid-autumn Lantern Carnival, and the Hong Kong Product Expo in December.
In additional, the Park has become the venue of "City Forum", a current affairs debate show produced by RTHK, on every Sunday since 1980. The programme is modeled after the public debates held in Hyde Park of London and is broadcast on TV live. Usually lawmakers and senior officials are invited to attend and to state their views on public affairs. Frequent members of the audience include a group of old people who are recognised for habitual abuse of words, sometimes profanities laden, at politicians of the democratic camp. They are known as "uncles of Victoria Park" in Hong Kong.
The Victoria Park is also a major venue for mass assemblies. Each year since 1990, the Alliance in Support of Democratic Movements in China have organised candlelight vigils there in memory of June 4th incident. Every year, tens of thousands of participants with candles fill several football pitches, to remember those who lost their lives and to demand vindication for those who sufferred persecution. The Park is also used as the starting points for many major public protests, like that on 1st July 2003, 1st July 2004, and that held on 4th December 2005 for universal sufferage.
