I currently have 41 :D

Ophelia (6y), Gypsy (4y), and Dandy (2y) are all mixed doggies.
Mink (12), Twiggy (5), Daisy (8), and Greta (7) are all shorthaired kitties.
The 11 rats are Fig, Sweeny, Norman, Dilbert, Elliot, Dipsy, Dale, Lala, Numy, Glory and Meese. They are all between 1-2 years old.
Lilac, Inky, Raggy and Nickel are mice. All around 1.5 years.
Rebel (6), Charlie (6) and Marley are cockatiels. I'm not sure about Marley's age, but she's quite old.
Pneup, Kroko, Gobbles and Fiji are bugies. I have no idea on their age, but they are at least 9.
Blossom and Snowy are blue tongue skinks. They're both around 4. Snowy's probably older.
Relly, Rubo and Fitz are bearded dragons, no clue about ages.
Rory, Lith and Tusk are leopard geckos. Not sure about ages.
Turtle is a jungle carpet python of about 4.
Mittens is a ball python, in his teens.
Krook and Chobby are corn snakes of around 3 years.

And that's that. How did I get so many? About two thirds were originally owned by my two roomates, and when we moved in we kinda fused them together. LOL By now were used to sharing responsibilities, which does mean equal time dedicated and expenses paid. Well worth it though!

Every single one of them were unwanted, either from a shelter, street, or from stupid people selling their pets because they realize they don't want to clean and play with them after all. The amount of animals we have accumulated only goes to show how people should take pet ownership seriously. Pets are for life. :)

Rats! (Fancy rats/Rattus Norvegicus/the Norway rat). Oh, and some African Soft-Furred rats (Praomys Natalensis).
From the perspective of someone experienced with ALOT of pets, they are kinder(LESS likely to bite), calmer (especially males) and you can almost always get more than one of either sex and they won't fight, whereas most other (rodents at least) will fight.
Rats are generally healthier. You do need to have a vet for rats, but some animals have been bred and inbred much more, and so have a wider range of health problems. Also rats can live off of rat blocks, which are way cheaper than most other foods, that and your leftover fruits and vegetables! They're fun. That's just general info, look up rats if you do decide to learn more.
I have 12, and 2 are expecting. = )
