An elderly woman died after being stabbed in her left thigh by an Indian sailor in Princess Margaret hospital yesterday. The 25-year-old suspect, believed to be suffering from depression and mental disorder, was subdued by three police officers at the scene .Initial reports indicated he did not know the 77-year-old victim.
The woman, surnamed Tai, was admitted to the emergency unit earlier suffering from a stomach ailment. The assailant allegedly took a 20 centimeter-long knife from a suitcase and stabbed the woman, who was in bed. she died at about 1.3p.m.
Sham Shui po police chief inspector Ip ka-ho said the suspect, who works on a cargo ship anchored at the kwai chung container terminal, was taken to the hospital after showing signs of depression and mental disorder.
He was later taken to kwai chung hospital. A blue suitcase and a knife were seized. An autopsy will be conducted tomorrow.
