Pickpocketing is simply known as "theft from person" now with the mode of trial being what is known as a "either way" meaning that it is dealt with by either a magistrates court with the maximum sentence up to six months prison and/or a fine up to £5000 or if it goes to a crown court with the maximum sentence being is up to seven years in prison in crown court and/or a fine up to £5000.
What court deals with the crime is up to the circumstances, the magistrate may get the case first for example and decide because the offender has say 30 convictions for the same crime in the past and has not learnt his lesson with little 6 months sentences may then refer the case to the crown court to give them a tougher sentence but in reality there would have to be serious circumstances for a simple "pickpocketing" to get to crown court..
The minimum could be just a telling off, a fixed fine, one day in prison, one week etc etc..... its up to the judge at the time so there is no real way of saying what the minimum is.
uk exceptionally i might wager the minimum sentence could be a weeks holiday in a 5 action picture star motel and the utmost is probably an international extensive cruise on the fanciest ocean liner. seems approximately real for British Justice, No?
there is no minimum sentance, but the criminal justice act states theft offences (including theft from person) can holde maximum sentance of 25 years at crown court
