KowloonCanton Railway

East Rail (the former Kowloon-Canton Railway or KCR) came into service in 1910 as a single track system. At that time, KCR trains ran from Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon through the New Territories and up to the border at Lo Wu.

Trains were initially steam hauled, but diesel traction was gradually introduced in the 1950s and by 1962 had replaced all steam trains. 1973 marked the next stage of modernization with the introduction of the double tracking and electrification of the railway commenced. The first stage of electrification was completed with the start of an inner suburban service between Kowloon and Sha Tin on 6 May 1982. Just over a year later, on 15 July 1983, the final section to Lo Wu was opened by the then Governor, Sir Edward Youde.

Prior to 1982, the railway had operated as a Government department but in December of that year the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation was created through the enactment of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation Ordinance. The Corporation is still wholly government owned and a Managing Board, whose members are appointed by the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, monitors its operations.

Over the years, the Corporation has expanded its network. In 1984, the Corporation accepted the Government's invitation to build and operate Light Rail in the North West New Territories. Light Rail commenced service in September 1988.

West Rail, which operates a mass transit service between the North West New Territories and urban Kowloon, was commissioned in December 2003.

In October 2004 the opening of the Tsim Sha Tsui Extension extended East Rail southwards from Hung Hom to East Tsim Sha Tsui. In December of the same year, Ma On Shan Rail came into service, serving the North East New Territories and enabling easy access to East Rail via Tai Wai Station. Commissioned in August 2007, the new Lok Ma Chau Spur Line provides a convenient new way to cross the boundary at Lok Ma Chau.

九廣輕鐵﹝簡稱輕鐵，前稱輕便鐵路﹞連接新界西北部的屯門、元朗及天水圍，由九廣鐵路公司經營，該系統在一九八八年投入服務。輕便鐵路系統現全長36.15公里，共有12條路線、68個車站，行走的單卡或雙卡列車合共119卡。
