What is it that keeps us hanging on to traditions that we dread yet keep them anyway?

people are creatures of habit, break that routine and people are very uncomfortable, even if it was for the better

Family traditions. When you are young you don't get traditions, when you are older you understand how precious they are. I think they are a way to hold on to where we came from or where our family comes from. Traditions help us realize who we used to be and what our culture means to us. It creates a feeling of belonging. You should watch Fiddler on the roof, this movie would explain the question you have asked.

I don't think most people keep them tradition if they hate it. When you start your own family and all that, you make new traditions...or try.

That is the feeling! If it is feel tradition is bad and will not keep, the other hand, if the tradition is good and some good idea, it will be keep and want to do some improvement.
