Absolute Thresholds are the amount of intensity needed to detect a difference between something and nothing.
Example: Driving on a highway and a billboard is in the distance. The absolute threshold is the point at which you can first see the billboard. Before that point, the billboard is below absolute threshold and is not sufficiently intense to be seen.

Differential Thresholds refer to the intensity difference needed between two stimuli before people can perceive that the stimuli are different. Differential threshold is a relative concept; often called the just noticeable difference (JND)
Example: When you first get your eyes checked, the eye doctor often shows you a row of letters through different sets of lenses. If you can detect a difference between the two lenses, the new lens is sufficiently different to have crossed the differential threshold.

At times, marketers do not want consumers to cross the differential threshold. (changes to product size vs. price, nonalcoholic beer vs. alcoholic beer) etc…so, Absolute Thresholds is more important to the marketers.
