Question:

A car park charges $45 for the first 2 hours and $12 for each additional hour.

Find the number of parking hours if the average parking rate is $15.5/h.

Let x be the number of parking hours is the average parking rate is $15.5/h.
$15.5x = $45 + ( x - 2 ) $12
$15.5x = $45 + $12x - $24
$15.5x - $12x = $45 - $24
$3.5x = $21
x=6

Therefore, the number of parking hours is 6.
