How many PC/laptop(s) do you have? If direct wiring is not an issue, try connecting all your PC together to the router's available ports. There are, generally speaking, 4 ports at the back of the router which means you can connect up to 4 PC to a router directly. This will give you a better performance in terms of internet connectivity. Of course, if it is a wireless router, more PC can be connected wirelessly and no more messy cabling. I think wireless router is the solution you prefer since you mention about the walls between the living room and the bedroom. What you need is a Wireless G router as its range could cover 25m to 35m. Of course, the more concrete walls, the weaker the signal will be. If budget is not an issue, you can buy Wireless N router. The other factors you might want to consider is interference. G router signal might get interfered by 2.4Ghz cordless phone, microwaves and other Electronics using the same frequency. However, you can add a piece of hardware called Wireless Signal repeater to boost the signal
Now, going back to the topic - Price. Correct me if I am wrong, I think the router price range is around $500-$800. Over $2000 is for sure pricy...

What you need to consider the router is the ease of use, installation and its software. Routers are pretty much the same in terms of functions unless you are looking for specific features such as web hosting, VPN, etc.
Cisco (Linksys) - I dont use it but my company does, Tech Support is good, but not sure about the hardware itself
D-Link - got one broken already in 1 month, still waiting for replacment
Netgear - used it for years, no issue (was trying to replace my Netgear with D-Link)
Other brands: Buffalo, Belkin
Suggestions: Belkin F5D72314, Dlink WBR2310, Netgear WGT624, Buffalo WHR-HP-G54, Linksys WRT54GC

yes, 2.4GHz cordless phone is the most common electronic which will interfere the G router as they use almost the same frequency. Besides, your neighbours may also have G router for their wireless connections

N router has less interference because most of them are dual band using 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz. On top of that, it can cover wider area up to 200 feet. One thing I forgot to mention is wireless adapter/card.

You must have wireless N adapter/card when using N router; otherwise, you will not get the same speed and performance.

If you are thinking N router, try this one: Buffalo Wireless-N Nfiniti WZR2-G300N. Why homeplug? you still need a router if using homeplug... 200 mpbs homeplug will cost you an arm and a leg ($800~$1000)
