Origins
The 1980s had marked a low point for English football. Stadiums were crumbling, supporters endured poor facilities, hooliganism was rife, and English clubs were banned from European competition following the events at Heysel in 1985. The Football League First Division, which had been the top level of English football since 1888, was well behind foreign leagues such as Italy's Serie A and Spain's La Liga in attendances and revenues, and several top English players had moved abroad. However, by the turn of the 1990s the downward trend was starting to reverse; England had been successful in the 1990 FIFA World Cup, reaching the semi-finals. UEFA, European football's governing body, lifted the five-year ban on English clubs playing in European competitions in 1990 and the Taylor Report on stadium safety standards, which proposed expensive upgrades to all-seater stadiums, was published in January of that year.


Establishment
After the top sides in England's demands for a bigger share of television revenue were not met, the top 22 teams broke off the First Division and formed a new league: The FA Premier League

The league held its first season in 1992–93 and was originally composed of 22 clubs. The first ever Premiership goal was scored by Brian Deane of Sheffield United in a 2–1 win against Manchester United. Due to insistence by FIFA, the international governing body of football, that domestic leagues reduce the number of games clubs played, the number of clubs was reduced to 20 in 1995 when four teams were relegated from the league and only two teams were promoted. On 8 June 2006, FIFA requested that all major European leagues, including Italy's Serie A and Spain's La Liga be reduced to 18 teams by the start of the 2007–08 season. The Premier League responded by announcing their intention to resist such a reduction.[5] Ultimately the 2007-08 season kicked off again with 20 teams.

The league changed its name from the 'FA Premier League' to simply the 'Premier League' on February 12, 2007.

英格蘭超級足球聯賽（FA Premier League），2004年巴克萊銀行成為英超的贊助商，冠名為巴克萊超級足球聯賽（Barclays English Premier League），通常簡稱英超，是英格蘭足總屬下的職業足球聯賽。由超級聯盟負責具體運作。英格蘭超級聯賽成立於1992年2月20日，其前身是英格蘭甲級聯賽，是英格蘭聯賽系統的最高等級聯賽。現時英超聯賽已經成為世界上最受歡迎的體育賽事之一。巴克萊銀行與超級聯賽簽署價值6580萬英鎊贊助合約延長3年到2010年。 [1]
第一場英超比賽是1992年8月15日舉行，由甸尼射入英超第一球，英格蘭超級聯賽現有20支球隊，成立至今以曼聯戰績最佳。截至2006/07賽季，英超只有四隊曾經奪得冠軍:曼聯9次奪得冠軍；阿仙奴3次奪冠；車路士2次奪冠；布力般流浪則於1994/1995賽季奪冠。
賽制
聯賽採取主客雙循環賽制比賽，每支隊伍與各球隊對賽兩次，主客各一次。由1995-96年球季開始參賽球隊由22隊減至20隊，每支球隊共進行38場賽事，無論主場或作客比賽各有19場。每場勝仗可得3分，和局得1分，負仗則0分，按各隊於聯賽所得的積分排列。

如球隊在聯賽結束時積分相同，則需順序按以下方法排列名次：

比較球隊的聯賽進球數
如上述方法都不能決定球隊的排名且涉及到聯賽冠軍及降班名額，則兩隊於中立場進行一場附加賽決出勝負，其他則按有關隊伍作相同排名。
在2005至2006年度球季共有20隊球隊參與角逐，完成所有賽事後總積分最高的隊伍可以奪得聯賽冠軍，而總積分最低的3隊球隊會降級至冠軍聯賽。同時，冠軍聯賽首2名肯定獲得下一賽季的升級名額，而冠軍聯賽的第3至6名則會作附加賽決定最後一個升級名額。

英格蘭聯賽盃冠軍:可參加第一圈賽事(如聯賽盃冠軍為該季聯賽第一至五名,該名額由聯賽第六名隊伍補上，如果聯賽第六名隊伍已經取得參加足協盃的資格，最後由聯賽第七名隊伍取代。)
