I think that you only confuse with the word of "have"

One of the meaning of HAVE in Chinese is 吃;喝
for example
Have a cup of coffee, please.
請喝杯咖啡。

What did you have for dinner last night? = 昨天晚上你吃了什麼?

I have beef steak for dinner and an ice-cream for dessert

what did you have= 你食左乜
dinner=晚餐
last night=昨晚
你尋晚食左d乜.

你昨晚在晚餐時吃了甚麼?
a:I had rice, chicken, vegetables and soup.
