句式<1>, stop + gerund, 是指停止該進行中的動作/行為:

I stopped eating dinner.
我停止進食晚餐.

Joseph stopped eating snacks at once when the teacher has entered into the classroom.
當老師進入班房時, 約瑟立即停止吃零食.


句式<2>, stop + infinitive, 是指停止該進行中的動作/行為, 作另外一個動作/行為:

I stopped to eat dinner.
我(停止進行中的動作/行為)去進食晚餐.

While doing his homework, Peter stopped to watch the television when his father turned it on.
當彼得的爸爸開電視機時, 彼得放下他的家課去看電視.

stop to ... 他停止了原來的動作以進行接著的動作
stop +ing ... 他不再做那個動作了
