為什麼聖誕節要食火雞


在傳統的聖誕餐桌上,烤火雞是不可缺少的菜式。在一些亞洲國家,或許每年只有耶誕節這一天才吃火雞,以慶祝佳節;但在歐美,尤其是美洲大陸,火雞卻是很普通的一種肉食,而且在感恩節和耶誕節這兩個大日子,火雞更是傳統的食品。

火雞是美洲特產,在歐洲人到美洲之前,已經被印地安人馴化。火雞的名字在英文中叫“土耳其”。因為歐洲人覺得它的樣子像土耳其的服裝:身黑頭紅。歐洲人很喜歡吃烤鵝。在移民到美洲之後,還沒有養好鵝就有了吃鵝的要求,於是就吃火雞,竟然發現火雞比鵝好吃。而且北美洲有很多火雞。於是烤火雞成了美國人的大菜,重要節日中必不可少。

這種風俗已有三百多年的歷史了。

據說在一六二零年的耶誕節,大批來自英國的移民抵達美洲大陸的樸裏茅斯山。當時,那兒物產貧乏,只有遍佈山野的火雞,於是他們便捉火雞,作為過節的主菜。

因此聖誕大餐裏,除了火腿、甘薯、蔬菜、葡萄幹布丁、水果餅、雞尾酒之外,當然少不了火雞這位“仁兄”了!
