在回答你問題之先，想介紹一個生字給你，這個生字就是：stink是名詞意思”惡臭”、臭氣；如：The stink of rotting seaweed was strong along the seashore.(沿著海岸都是腐海草的惡臭）
但它也是一個動詞，其中一個意思是發出惡臭。如：
The butcher's shop stank in hot weather.
肉舖熱天散發腥臭味。
而這個字的形容詞是stinky
所以，你可以說：it smells stinky(smell是發出氣味之意，所以不用助語詞is)
但你想說”榴槤開起很臭”，你可以說：
Durians stink when they were cleaved.
但英文也可以有很多講法
