The Faculty of Dentistry, formally established in 1982, is located in the Prince Philip Dental Hospital in Sai Ying Pun. The Faculty has reorganised itself into a unitary structure with no departments but with many disciplines, and an executive Dean has been appointed to run its affairs. The Prince Philip Dental Hospital has been extensively re-equipped with the most appropriate up-to-date dental equipment available. The curriculum has undergone a complete redesign so that graduates will be well suited to handle evolving demands on the dental profession in Hong Kong.
To be a dentist
First and foremost, a dentist deals with people. The profession is dedicated to the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of all aspects of oral disease. The dentist is leader of a dental care team, which may consist of dental surgery assistants, dental technicians, dental hygienists and dental therapists. Dentists enjoy the daily challenge of using sound scientific knowledge, modern techniques, and advanced equipment and materials in solving clinical problems for their patients. Most dental surgeons have regular working hours in a challenging but comfortable environment. They command the benefits of a high professional status and a stable, above-average income.
