The event came less than two months after the accident （ 意 外 事 故 之 後 不 足 兩 個 月 ， 這 件 事 發 生 了 ） 一 語 ， 為 什 麼 用 less than 來 說 可 數 名 詞 （ countable ） month ？
英 文 有 一 條 原 則 ， 即 說 到 「 較 少 」 ， 可 數 名 詞 用 fewer ， 不 可 數 名 詞 （ uncountable noun ） 用 less ， 例 如 fewer people （ 較 少 人 ） 、 less water （ 較 少 水 ） 等 。
但 上 述 原 則 應 是 十 八 世 紀 才 制 定 ， 而 根 據 《 牛 津 英 文 字 典 》 （ Oxford English Dictionary ） ， 從 阿 弗 烈 大 帝 （ Alfred the Great 849-899 ） 時 代 開 始 ， less 即 見 和 可 數 名 詞 連 用 。 今 天 ， 不 少 英 語 國 家 知 識 分 子 還 是 不 自 覺 的 遵 從 古 法 ， 例 如 《 卡 斯 爾 常 見 英 文 錯 誤 指 南 》 （ The Cassell Guide to Common Errors in English ） 一 書 引 述 英 國 廣 播 公 司 第 四 台 一 句 話 ： There'll be a lot less people in the army （ 軍 隊 人 數 將 大 減 ） 。 假 如 你 不 想 被 文 法 家 挑 剔 ， 這 類 句 子 不 妨 改 用 fewer 。 不 過 ， 以 下 幾 點 仍 請 注 意 。







第 一 ， 「 （ no ） less than ＋ 數 目 ＋ 可 數 名 詞 」 ， 似 乎 比 「 （ no ） fewer than ＋ 數 目 ＋ 可 數 名 詞 」 較 為 常 見 ， 例 如 ： We covered no less than ten miles （ 我 們 走 了 最 少 十 英 里 ） 。 把 這 一 句 的 less 改 為 fewer ， 就 會 像 謹 守 「 文 法 」 的 初 中 學 生 造 句 。

One 之 後 也 用 less ， 例 如 ： One less worker means less productivity （ 少 一 個 工 人 ， 生 產 力 自 然 下 降 ） 。

有 一 首 英 文 歌 說 ： Now there's two less lonely people in the world （ 現 在 ， 世 上 少 了 兩 個 寂 寞 的 人 ） 。 但 people 是 可 數 名 詞 （ countable noun ） ， 為 什 麼 用 less 而 不 用 fewer ？ 又 people 是 複 數 ， there 之 後 為 什 麼 用 is 而 不 用 are ？
按 few 和 little 都 是 說 「 少 」 ， 但 few 和 可 數 名 詞 連 用 ， little 則 和 不 可 數 名 詞 連 用 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） There are few people in the street （ 街 上 的 人 寥 寥 可 數 ） 。 （ 2 ） There is little time left （ 剩 下 的 時 間 不 多 了 ） 。 第 一 句 不 可 用 little 取 代 few ， 第 二 句 也 不 可 用 few 取 代 little 。
