Nowadays, 25% of land in the world is under the threat of desertification. There
are four major regions suffering from frequent sand storms: North America,
Central Africa, Australia and the Middle East Asia.
In Africa, during the early-70s and mid-80s, the southern Sahara suffered a lot
from sand storms. It was due to long lasting drought and over cultivation by the
people. These, in turns, came with the after-effect of grassland deterioation,
barren farmland and thus intensifying the sand storms. This resulted in the
contamination to the surrounding areas.
In North America, the deserts are widely distributed in western US and the north
part of Mexico. In the nearby regions of the desserts. Sand storms are common
and there may even be so-called 'Black Storms' swirling around the vast plain.
In Australia, 75% of lands are in the categories of drought earth or semi-drought
earth. Sand stroms are frequent, which maybe 5 times or more a year, in the
central part and the west coast. The climate is extremely dry in most of the area.
Accompanying with the effect of cultivation and animal farming, vegetation are
being ripped away and those factors lead to the exposure of the surfacing soil
which will end up with desertification.
As in the Mid-east Asia, the 5 countries among the region, is experiencing rapid
development. Blooming population, excess consuming of underground water,
uncontrolled logging of forests, overcultivation of animals, will result in grassland
deterioration and desertification. Consequently, the salt-land area increase to
the extent of over 15000 square km.
