English vs Linguistics

I am sitting for the 2008 AL Exam and decide to put HKU BA in JUPAS Band A1. If manage to enter it, most probably I will major English or Linguistics in year 2. Actually, what's their difference? If I prefer to concentrate on studying grammar and communication skills, which department is more suitable for me?

兩個東西很不同eng真的只讀英文,eg:oral,writting,reading,listening
ling要讀不同語言的原理,eg:音標,音韻,讀寫障礎,語言學習(不過hku會較集中英文的語言學)
你可在入了ba後先上一年+問一問其他人的意見,再決定major哪一科
grammar的話,要看一看你是想學他的原理<---這個去ling,或是實用方法<--這個去eng
你也可以一氣major這兩科,因為兩科也有共通點
