First, you should know that water is polar molecules.
Water H2O, consists of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom.
Hydrogen have 1 positively-charged proton and oxygen have 8 positively-charged protons
Therefore the electrons share by the covalent compound H2O tend to move towards the oxygen atom,
as a result the oxygen atom carry a slight negative charge, on the other hand hydrogen atoms carry a slight positive charge.
When sodium chloride is put into water, the positively-charged sodium ion are attracted by the slightly negatively-charged oxygen while the negatively-charged chloride ions are attracted by the slightly positively-charged hydrogen. Therefore, the structure of NaCl is broken and we can deduce that NaCl can dissolve in water.
