This two questions are just a concept question
1.It is known that the probability for the observatory of a country to make an accurate forecast of tomorrow temperature is 0.97.Find the probability that the observatory makes an inaccurate forecast of tomorrow temperature.
ANSWER
The observatory can only make an accurate forecast or inaccurate forecast. Since the total probability is 1
P(make an accurate forecast)+P(make an inaccurate forecast)=1
0.97+P(make an inaccurate forecast)=1
P(make an inaccurate forecast)=0.03
The probability that the observatory makes an inaccurate forecast of tomorrow temperature is 0.03
2.The probability for Christopher to be the representative of a class to participate in the Inter-school Singing Contest is 0.3 while that for Michelle is 0.25.If there is only one representative in the class,What is the participate in the singing contest?
ANSWER
Let P(A) be the probability that student A represents of a class to participate in the Inter-school Singing Contest
Then P(Christopher)=0.3, P(Michelle)=0.25
Now, there is only one representative in the class. Without any new information, we can only choose between Christopher or Michelle. Also, because the probability of Christopher is higher than Michelle, we should conclude that the participate in the singing contest is Christopher.
