Use organic solvents such as alcohol and methanol, etc
If it was a marker, it will come off with a little isopropanal (rubbing alcohol) Do it really carefully - practice on other copies so you don't ruin the good copy! - use a q-tip. Use at least 70% ethanol, but 100% works the BEST! If it wasn't a sharpie or another brand that uses the same kind of ink, but still a marker, than it was probably more like a laundry pen. That kind of ink comes off with a little acetone - nail polish remover and hair spray will remove most inks too!" You can also buy pure acetone at the beauty supply-it's what they use to soak fake nails off with....but be careful it melts some kinds of plastics. it's pretty strong stuff.
I also read this morning that methanol might also work, but you may have some trouble laying your hands on that. The e-mail message I copied above for you makes reference to both isopropanol and ethanol---but they are not the same thing. Isopropanol is rubbing alcohol. Ethanol is the kind that people drink. So, you can get that---but you'll need something in the140 proof and above range...something like "Everclear." (I teach high school science, so I have access to both the 200 proof stuff and the methanol, but that doesn't do you any good. A visit to the liquor store and drug store should supply you with the stuff you need.)
I think the big thing is to make sure that you find a spot to test on the document before you do the whole thing. I suppose that you could always get another copy of the court documents if you had to, but it would be nicer if you didn't have to go through that.
