Potassium permanganate KMnO4
In the presence of light, KMnO4 solution decomposes to give MnO2(s) and oxygen.
2 KMnO4(aq) → K2MnO4(aq) + 2MnO2(aq) + O2
Sulphuric acid has to be added to acidify potassium permanganate, in order speed up reaction and not to form MnO2, but the acid chosen must not react with potassium permanganate, so sulphuric acid is chosen.
