Given that the first four lines in the visible region of the emission spectrum of hydrogen.
(Given: h= 6.62 x 10^-34 Js, L = 6.02 x 10^23, c = 3 x 10^8 m/s)
a) What is the given name to the above series of lines? ( Sorry! I cannot show the graph here!)
b) Calculate the frequency of the violet line in the spectrum if that of the red line is 4.572 x 10^14 Hz.

(a) Balmer Series
(b) With reference to the formula of the Balmer series below:

where RH is the Rydberg constant, we have:
For the first line, i.e. the red line, n = 3
For the fourth line, i.e. the violet line, n = 6
So, comparing their ratio of wavelength:
Wavelength (violet) : Wavelength (red)
= [(1/22) - (1/32)] : [(1/22) - (1/62)]
= 5 : 8
Hence, their frequencies are in the ratio of:
Freq (violet) : Freq (red) = 8 : 5
And therefore, the frequency of the violet line in the spectrum is:
(8/5) x 4.572 x 1014 = 7.315 x 1014 Hz
