We anticipate the last 2 sets of data (ie. apparent loss in weight and the actual displacement) taken from the first experiment to be in close proximity. In the second experiment, the weight of the wood and that of the water it displaced are supposed to be more or less the same. However, there exists marked difference between the recorded data and our anticipation.
We attribute such deviation to the errors in 2 aspects:
A. improper handling
1. too much force has been applied in placing the object into the water so that certain amount of water splashed out in the process; and
2. wrongly use of spring balance to weigh the floating wood as the spring of the balance might have exerted on the wood a lifting force which would set off some of the weight of the wood and lessened the volume of water displaced.
B. defective apparatus
defectiveness of apparatus might affect the accuracy of the readings taken.
Suggested improvements:
To exercise greater caution when placing the object into the water ; and
To use tools of higher precisio.
