My “Japan tong” friend also explained to me what will be happened around the days we planned to go Japan:
Dec 31/ Jan 1 – Japanese will wear the traditional clothes to visit the temples (just like CNY)
Jan 1-3 – Big sale starts on Jan 1, many “lucky bag” available at all department stores. Local jap will shop in these few days and dept stores are filled up with people. However, the shop will close at around 4/5 pm.
Jan 4 -7 – shop will open day long. there may be further sale discounts. So my friend recommends us to be ready to shop on jan 4.
Jan 7-14 – end of big sale period.
