Yes, this is a free service, and that calls 'eAlert', you can set as notify you via SMS and/or via email as well
In Investment section, they offer FREE Investment Order Confirmation, IPO Update, and ForEx Switching Notification and they also offer other charge eAlert as well on the banking facilities, such as below balance notification
If you would like set that up, you can process at the branch, or if you have online banking, then the easiest way is to go to online banking, after you log on, under the 'My HSBC' tap, in the left hand side, there is a function 'Manage eAlerts', then you can select the 'Set up New eAlerts' then fill in some info, then they will process.
