Heat required to melt all the 0.5 kg ice = 0.5 x 334 kJ = 167 kJ
where 334 kJ/kg is the specific latent heat of fusion of ice.
Heat given out by the 1 kg water when its temperature drops to 0 deg.C
= 1 x 4200 x 20 J = 84,000 J = 84 kJ
Thus the heat given out by the water is not sufficient to melt ALL the 0.5 kg of ice (in fact, only 0.25 kg of ice is melted). The final ice and water mixture is thus at 0 deg.C
