(Flee)Past tense
The thief fled before the police arrived.
Past perfect
The thief has already fled before the police arrived.
(Fly) - there is quite a number of usage
Past tense - flew
The birds flew past.
Past perfect
The birds have flown in many miles to be here for winter.
