12. The dimensions of a rectangular cardbroad are 26 cm x 16cm. A square of side x cm is cut away from each corner of the cardbroad. The remaining part is floded up to form an open box.

(a) Express the base area of the open box in terms of x.

answer: (4x² - 84x + 416)cm²

(b) If the base area of the box is 200 cm². find the volume of the box.

answer: 600 cm²

(a) Base area = (26-2x)(16-2x) = 416 - 52x - 32 x + 4x^2 = (4x^2 - 84x + 416)cm^2

(b) 4x^2 - 84x + 416 = 200
x^2 - 21x + 54 = 0
(x-3)(x-18) = 0
x = 3 or 18 (rejected, since 18>16 = width/length of cardboard)

Volume = (26-6)x(16-6)x3 = 20x10x3 = 600cm^3
