"Newton's cradle" consists usually of five small steel spheres, each suspended by two light strings. Modelling this by a no. of particles each suspended by two strings inclined at 80* to the horizontal, find the tension in each string when:
(a) the weight of each steel sphere is 0.8N
(b) the mass of each steel sphere is 0.1kg

The correct answer of (a) and (b) are 0.406N and 0.498N

(a) T = 0.8 / cos (90°-80°), where T is the total tension of two string.
T = 0.812N
So, the tension in each string is 0.406N.
(cos 10° because a string is inclined at 80° to the horizontal, i.e. 10° to the vertical)
(b) weight = mg
= 0.1 (10) = 1N
Similar to part (a), T = 1 / cos (90°-80°) = 1.015N
So, the tension in each string is 0.508N.
(Your answer is 0.498N properly due to the value taken of g) (You took g = 9.8)
