Chemistry: About carbon reacting with oxygen-- 10 pts!!

1. Under what conditions would carbon react with oxygen to become CO instead of CO2 (or the other way round)?

2. In the extraction of iron from haematite industrially, coke reacts with oxygen to form CO2, which further reacts with more coke to form carbon monoxide.

Why doesn't it react with oxygen to form CO straight away?

✔ 最佳答案
1. In incomplete combution(不完全燃燒) (燃燒=burn=combustion=react with oxygen).
不完全燃燒 is a substance react with oxygen which is not enough. (和不足夠的氧做反應)
Normally, carbon will react with enough oxygen to form carbon dioxide as a only product.
C + O2 = CO2
However, if oxygen is not enough, some carbon may not react with oxygen and remains as carbon and some will also form carbon monoxide.

2. Because the reaction of carbon with not enough oxygen MAY NOT produce enough carbon monoxide and the process of producing amount of carbon monoxide is not easy to control, as i said before, carbon will form also.

But if carbon react with carbon dioxide in factory, it is reacting with excess carbon dioxide, so amost all carbon will react.

In carbon react with oxygen, not all carbon can react to form CO
In carbon react with carbon dioxide, as there are so many CO2, amost all carbon can form CO
