how to do a flame test (sodium)

Put a platinum wire into concentrated hydrochloric acid to remove the impurities on the surface of the wire.


Then dip the wire to take a piece of sodium metal.


Heat the sample gently under non-luminous Bunsen flame.


A brilliant golden yellow is resulted.


This shows that the sample contains sodium.
