1. The total cost for tuition plus room and board for one quarter at Southern State University is $6584. Tuition costs $704 more than room and board. What is the quarterly tuition fee?
I can do this word problem,
2x-704=6584
2x=7288
x=3644
but I don't know why do I have to use minus(-), can somebody explain to me!!! thanks!!!

Tuition cost + Room & board cost is $6584, not $6582

I think your calculatio wasn't correct.

Tuition cost + Room & board cost = $6582

Tuition cost is $704 more than room & board
--> tuition cost - room & board cost = 704

let tuition cost = X
room & board cost = Y

X-Y=704
X=704+Y
We also know X+Y=6582
704+Y+Y=6582
2Y=5878
Y=2939

X=3643

Hence Tuition Cost = $3643
and Room & Board cost = $2939
