Let x be the mother's age
Let y be the girl's age

1. y=x/2 + 2
2. x+y=62

Put 1 into 2

x+x/2+2=62
2x+x+4=124
3x=120
x=40

Put x=40 into 2
y=62-40
y=22

let the girl's age be x , and mother's age be y.

x-2 = 1/2 y -------- (1)
x + y = 62 --------- (2)

from (2)
x + y = 62
x = 62 - y ------- (3)

sub (3) into (1),

x-2 = 1/2 y
(62-y) - 2 = 1/2 y
62-y-2 = 1/2 y
60 = 3/2 y
y = 40

put y = 40 into (2)

x + y = 62
x+40 = 62
x = 22

so the girl's age is 22 years old and her mother's age is 40 years old.

let age of girl be x
age of mother be y
x+y = 62 ---(1)
x-2 = y/2 ---(2)
(1)-(2),
y+2 = 62 - y/2
2y + 4 = 124 - y
y=40
x=22

girl's age = x, mother's age = y
x = y/2 + 2, 2x = y + 4 ------------ (1)
x + y = 62 ------------ (2)
(1) + (2), 3x + y = y + 66, x = 22
22 + y = 62, y = 40
girl's age = 22, mother's age = 40
