English - A close run thing

Pls explain the following sentence, thank you.


It was a ________ run thing. We nearly lost the contract to our rivals.


As I don't clear about the underlined part, can I use "close run" ? If correct, what does it mean for "close run"


I can not check it from dictionary. Is it a phrasal verb?


Pls help me, thank you.

It was a close run thing. We nearly lost the contract to our rivals.
This is correct.
CLOSE RUN somebody means to be nearly as good, fast, etc. as someone else:
The above sentence indicates one company with similar financial or labor ability as good as yours then you are barely win the contract by other factors.
