Studying Accounting and Finance is to aim to be an accountant or a financial analyst. It is like studying medical to become a doctor. A doctor deals with people's health problem while an accountant is a business doctor who deals with a company's money. With the knowledge of accounting and finance, you are able to do costing, budgeting, payrolls, bookkeeping, taxes, data analysing, auditing, performance management and so on.
If you study Accounting and Finance, you will study bookkeeping (credit and debit, double entry), business and company law, information technology, how to draft the financial reports (profit and loss account and balance sheet), audit, taxation, marketing, economics & etc.
HKICPA (Hong Kong Institution of CPAs) is the only statutory licensing bodies of accountants. Formly it is called HKSA (Hong Kong Society of Accountants). It is a privilege to join this accounting body to become a member.
In England, ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), CIMA (Chartered Institutions of Managment Accountants are two of the examples of accounting bodies in UK. There are many more in the UK.
All these accounting bodies set out a number of papers which a candidate must pass all these examinations plus 3-years practical experiences in order to qualify to be a certified accountants.
Theoretically, they are pretty much the same, but the differences are the taxation in practices and the legal system in two different countries.
