It really depends of the config, for regional/long haul use...
let's have a comparison with Asian major airlines...
However, Boeing 777-300 (if you fit with 3-4-3 economy cabin; currently, you can see 2-5-2 or 3-3-3 config) could have more seats capacity then a B747-400. In Japan the seats(for domestic) are more compact then a lot of countries
Such an example,
Cathay Pacific's B747-400
with new long haul product: 379(324Y, 46J, 9F)
Premium: 345(268Y, 65J, 12F)
Standard: 383(324Y, 47J, 12F)
Singapore Airlines's B747-400
375(313Y, 50J, 12F)
372(310Y, 50J, 12F)
359(306Y, 41J, 12F)
Thai Ariways' B747-400
389(325Y, 50J, 14F)
375(325Y, 40J, 10F)
Malaysian Airlines' B747-400
386(318Y, 50J, 18F)
359(306Y, 41J, 12F)
Cathay Pacific's B777-300
385(326Y, 59J)
Singapore Airlines' B777-300
332(265Y, 49J, 18F)
