Both words have similar meaning but not identical. In most cases, you can choose either one, but sometimes you may have to choose the more appropriate one out of two depending on the situation.
suddenly (adv) - happening or done quickly and unexpectedly
abruptly (adv) - suddenly and unexpectedly, often in an unpleasant way
e.g.
Suddenly Mary gave John a kiss on his cheek.
