Like sulphur, it can have +6 oxidation state. BUt as I know most of its compounds form 2 covalent bonds with 2 oxygen and other 2 with single bonds. THerefore is it true that covalent counts in the coxidation state?

Sulphur can have oxidation states of -2, -1, 0, +2, +4, +6

Oxidation states
+6 SO3, (SO4)2-
+4 SO2, (SO3)2-
+2 SCl2
0 S8, S2
-1 FeS2
-2 FeS

covalent counts in the coxidation state

I hope this can help your understanding. :)

Usually we take the oxidation state for oxygen in oxide be -2so in your case NO2N is +4 & O is -2O=N=O is the formula for NO2 and it is covalent

this is only the oxidation state and not the electron has been captured by the oxygen atom, (otherwise it is a ionic compound)I hope this can help your understanding. :)
