The present tense is the tense (that is, the form of the verb) that may be used to express:

(1) action at the present time;
(2) a state of being;
(3) a habitual action;
(4) an occurrence in the near future; or
(5) an action that occurred in the past and continues up to the present.

1) for permanent states, repeated actions and daily routines
a) He works at a hotel. (permanent state)
b) He lays the tables and serves dinner every day. (daily routine / repeated actions)

2) for general truths and laws of nature
a) It rarely rains in the desert

3) for timetables, sports commentaries, reviews and narration
a) Hill kicks the ball and passes it to Dawson (sports commentary)
b) Laura Hunt acts superbly in the film (review)
c) So, the prince tells her ... (narration)
d) The plane to London takes off at 6:50 am. (timetable)

The present simple is used with the following time expressions: always, usually, etc., every day/ week/ month/ year, etc., on Mondays/ Tuesdays, etc., in the morning/ afternoon/ evening, at night/ the weekend, etc.
