Resonance&Stability

Why the existance of resonance structure can give a higher stability?

for example:
C6H5OH+H2O <=> C6H5O^- + H3O^+
C5H5O^- have 4 resonance structures..

and why the higher stability make the reaction go to the right ?

Can anyone explain it for me? THX!

As you know C6H5O- has resonance structures, this resonance structure helps C6H5O- to disperse(分散)the -ve charge on the oxgen atom.(即是個負電荷會在個aromatic ring 上走來走去) This means that the chance for the ionized H-atom to recombine with the -ve charged oxygen atom will be lower. (負電荷會吸引正電荷的離子,但當負電荷被分散時,負電荷吸正電荷的離子會無禁應,因為個負電荷已不是在氧分子這裏了.所以化學平衡向右移)
Why the existance of resonance structure can give a higher stability?
Resonace structure lowers the total potential energy of the cpd, making the cpd more stable. This can be tested by enthalpy of combustion. The more stable the cpd, the less heat energy will be given during the combustion process. You will find the answer by comparing graphite with diamond during combustion process.

-ve = negative
cpd = compound
I hope you will find my answer helpful.
