解釋:
1." someone is understood to be xxxx", 意思是"大家都認為這個人是xxxxx".
2. 跟在 "understood to be" 之後的, 可以是形容詞, e.g., This is understood to be common. =大家都認為這是常見的.
3. 如果跟在後面的是動詞, 就要使用+ing 的form, 使它變成具有形容詞性質的"現在分詞", 來形容那個人的動作. He is understood to be resigning = 大家都認為他要辭職了 / (同) 他辭職的機會很大.

樓上的答案:
1. resign (辭職) 沒有被動態 "be resigned". 有被動態的是"辭退"/"解僱" (dismiss), 被辭退是"be dismissed".
2. 原句沒有Mr. Wong 被辭退的含義. 解釋錯了.


第二句:
The suspect is believed to be hiding in Macau.
解釋:
同上, is believed to be 後面是動詞的時候, 要用+ing form來形容這個動作. e.g, The suspect is believed to be hiding in Macau = 大家都認為疑犯正躲在澳門

1. 文法上沒有錯. 因為is believed to be後面接動詞, 除了用+ing form 來形容動作之外, 也可以用"過去分詞", 形容一種被動的動作. e.g., The suspect is believed to be hid in Macau = 大家都相信疑犯被藏在澳門.
2. 但原本那句沒有"疑犯被人藏起來"這意思. 而且, 犯人多數是"躲起來"的, 人質之類才會"被藏起來", 所以還是用現在分詞比被動式好.

這是改成被動句的練習, 樓上可能因此以為所有動詞都要改成被動式, 所以出現了be resigned, be hid. 其實 is understood 和 is believed 而已經是被動式.

這個被動句練習的學習重點, 不是要把resign / hide 改成被動式. 最重要的, 是 is understood / is believed 這類被動句, 可以用來表達"可能性". Mr. Wong may be resigning 可以寫成 Mr. Wong is believed to be resigning, 用來表達這只是大家的猜估而已, 一樣有不肯定的意思. 下次寫"可能", 就不一定要寫"may be" "possible" 了, 知道了嗎?

Mr Wong is understood ( to be resigned.)
explain : he was asked to leave by (someone).

The suspect is believed ( to be hid in Macau.)
explain : (someone) believed he was hiding in Macau.

(note: In grammar, the voice of a verb describes the relationship between the action (or state) that the verb expresses and the participants identified by its arguments (subject, object, etc.). When the subject is the agent or actor of the verb, the verb is in the active voice. When the subject is the patient, target or undergoer of the action, it is said to be in the passive voice.
