Every months, there are numbers of "students" study French and French culture and civilisation in Paris and other French cities. It's very common. But you have a misunderstanding. Criminal cases in Paris is not as serious as you think. Of course there is some robberies happened, but it is the same in Sydney, right? I believe the order in Paris is much more better than in Shenzhen. I lived in Paris for a year before, I have never met a thief, or someone stole my belongings... Nothing happened on me...

If you have no knowledge about French language, I suggest you attend a basic French class in "Alliance Française" in Australia first. You will know what French langauge is first, or even you find that you don't like it after having few classes....
To learn French language, it would be better to find a place where people cannot speak English. Bordeaux, Nantes, Besançon, Rayon etc. are all good places to learn French language. The school of teaching language to foreigners are usually well-equipped in France.
Living cost in Sydney is already higher than in Hong Kong. The cost of living in Paris is slightly higher than Sydney, which will be around 150 - 160% of cost of living in Sydney. For example, a coffee in Gloria Jeans is around A$3.00 = HK$20.00. In Paris, a cup of coffee will be around 3.50 - 4.00 euro = HK$35 - 40.00. Of course it is only an example. Something in Paris is cheaper than Hong Kong or Australia, for example, cheese and red wine.
